Volumes were stronger in May in the emerging markets that we monitor, but the increases were generally less than in April, which had benefitted from particularly weak comparatives due to COVID.
May’s 2021’s demand in Muslim countries also benefited from the impact of Ramadan being 11 days less than in May 2020.
Cement shipments in May 2021 were higher than in May 2020 in 11 of the 12 countries for which data is currently available. There were double-digit percentage increases in nine of the countries.
Sequentially, comparing the percentage changes in May with those in April, the percentage was higher in May in only 3 of the 12 countries for which this data is available, as May 2020 was generally a tougher comparative than April 2020.
Cement consumption increased by a double-digit percentage in May in Argentina and Peru, both for the ninth month in succession, and in Brazil for the twelfth successive month.
